"Rimouski and the Empress of Ireland"- English version - Guided bus tour of significant places of the tragedy in Rimouski animated by historian David Saint-Pierre
On the night of May 29, 1914, the Empress of Ireland sank into the St. Lawrence River. In the morning, the people of Rimouski discovered the scale of the tragedy. Hundreds of survivors were welcomed into their homes, while on the Rimouski wharf, at the "Soeurs de la Charité" Hospital and the H.G. Lepage general store, residents organized to help the authorities. Through a number of significant sites in different Rimouski neighborhoods, we invite you on a journey back in time, highlighting the deep connection between Rimouski and the story of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland.
The 90-minute guided tour departs by bus from the Empress of Ireland Museum. Designed and led by historian David Saint-Pierre, a Rimouski native and expert on the ship's history, this activity is presented as part of the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland from May 29 to June 2 at the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père.
Offered in French on Saturday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday, June 2 at 1:30 p.m.
