South Korean cellist Sung-Won Yang and Italian pianist Enrico Pace return to Halifax to open our new season with a program of works by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Brahms, Debussy, and Franck. The concert moves from the clear lines and dialogue of the Bach sonatas to the larger scale of Brahms’s Sonata in E minor, before turning to Debussy’s Sonata and Franck’s Sonata. Sung-Won Yang performs internationally as both a soloist and chamber musician and has appeared in major halls across Europe, North America, and Asia. This powerful new song cycle by composer Michael Donovan and poet John Sobol receives its world premiere, featuring bass-baritone Marcus Nance, pianist Carl Philippe Gionet, and additional local singers. Written for nine voices and piano, this all-ages work gives voice to the natural world through a series of poems imagined as written by the animals themselves, set within a northern landscape shaped by beauty, fragility, and change. At its centre is the Ghost of the Woolly Mammoth, who encounters a Polar Bear, Arctic Tern, Bowhead Whale, Krill, Wolf, Moose, Lemming, and Arctic Blue Butterfly. Joined by baroque violinist Julia Wedman and cellist Christina Mahler, both longtime artists with Tafelmusik, this extraordinary trio explores music by Jean-Marie Leclair, J.S. Bach, Beth Silver, and Antonio Vivaldi, with the heart of the program being Lamon’s own string trio arrangement of Bach’s Ciaccona. Bach’s "St Matthew Passion," the work has become a popular pre-holiday tradition for Ekmeles in New York City.
