Violist, violinist, and conductor David Thies-Thompson has been a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 1990.
His formative teachers included Sydney Humphreys, Mauricio Fuks, and Stuart Knussen for intensive orchestral studies. He received diplomas from the Victoria Conservatory of Music (Victoria, B.C.) and the Royal Conservatory of Music, furthering his studies at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Banff Centre, the Eastman School of Music, and McGill University.
His professional orchestral life began at the age of 15 with the Victoria Symphony, followed by two seasons with Symphony Nova Scotia. In 2008, after 18 years in NACO’s violin section, David felt the lure of the viola section. Since taking up the viola, David is incredibly fortunate to have been invited on numerous occasions to play as a guest violist with the Berlin Philharmonic. He is an active chamber musician, currently exploring piano trio repertoire with the Oxbow Trio, and has performed as a collaborative musician in festivals in the National Capital Region and across Canada.
As a conductor, David served as Music Director of the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra for 14 seasons, conducted the NACO Players Association FanFair concerts for many years, and has enjoyed a long affiliation with the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy. As an instructor, David teaches privately and has taught at both of Ottawa’s universities and with the NAC Young Artists and International Orchestral Studies programmes. He has also given masterclasses for violinists and violists on NAC Orchestra tours across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, the U.K., Europe, and China.
David Thies-Thompson est né au Kenya, où son père était médecin missionnaire. Il avait cinq ans quand sa famille est arrivée au Canada, où elle s’est installée à Victoria (C.-B.). David a commencé à prendre des leçons de violon à sept ans, d’abord selon la méthode Suzuki, puis au Conservatoire de musique de Victoria (CMV) dans la classe de Sydney Humphreys. Après une pause pour poursuivre ses études, il a joint les rangs du Symphony Nova Scotia en 1988. En 1990, il a quitté Halifax pour s’établir à Ottawa où il est entré comme violoniste à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts. Après 18 années passées dans la section des violons, il a voulu relever un nouveau défi musical. C’est ainsi qu’en 2008, il s’est joint à la section des altos. En plus de son poste actuel à l’Orchestre du CNA, David s’est produit comme musicien invité avec divers orchestres et ensembles de musique de chambre dont l’Orchestre symphonique de Winnipeg, le Trio Gryphon et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin.
Il a par ailleurs tenu le rôle de violon solo avec l’ensemble Thirteen Strings, à l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa et à l’orchestre d’Opéra Lyra Ottawa. Il collabore souvent à la série Musique pour un dimanche après-midi de l’Orchestre du CNA, au Chamberfest d’Ottawa et au festival Musique et autres mondes, et il s’est produit récemment aux Concerts aux îles du Bic.
David a une autre corde à son… archet : la direction. Il a été directeur musical de l’Ottawa Chamber Orchestra de 1999 à 2013, et c’est lui qui dirige maintenant le concert de la Fanfoire de l’Association des musiciens de l’Orchestre du CNA. Il est aussi un coordonnateur clé de la campagne annuelle de financement de la Banque d’alimentation d’Ottawa et du Fonds Habineige.
Il participe activement aux activités de la cathédrale Christ Church d’Ottawa, qui a un éclectique programme d’art multidisciplinaire dont il assure la direction artistique. David fait beaucoup d’enseignement et s’adonne au jardinage. Il affectionne les moments passés en famille.
Justin Saulnier is a 18-year-old violinist from Orléans, Ontario. He was the recipient of the Lloyd Carr-Harris String Scholarship to attend McGill University Schulich School of music and is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in violin performance with Andrew Wan.
He was the concertmaster of Canada’s National Youth Orchestra for their 2022 season. He is also the former concertmaster of the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra and the Ottawa Youth Orchestra. He has also shared the stage with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, the Ottawa Pops Orchestra, and the Parkdale Orchestra.
As a soloist, Justin has received many awards, notably the first prize in the OMFA’s provincial competition, the Kinsmen Club Shield Trophy, the RCM Gold Medal, and the Edythe Young Browne Trophy. He is also the winner of the 2023 McGill Concerto Competition. He made his orchestral solo debut at age 12 with the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra and since then, has performed with the Pembroke Symphony Orchestra and the Ottawa Youth Orchestra. He was also invited to perform at la Chapelle du Bon-Pasteur, the RCM Celebration of Excellence, the Chamberfest Rising Stars concert, and the Southminster Church Doors Open For Music concert series. He has performed in masterclasses for many prominent violinists, such as James Ehnes, Catherine Cho, Mikhail Kopelman, Jonathan Crow, and Timothy Chooi.

OrKidstra is an Ottawa-based social development program that gives children from equity-deserving communities the opportunity to learn life skills—such as teamwork, commitment, and responsibility—through the joys and challenges of singing and playing music together.
OrKidstra’s mission is to empower kids and build community through music. OrKidstra accomplishes this by providing children from low-income families with free instruments and music lessons, giving them a chance to reach for success through music.
The program began in 2007 with 27 children and a passionate belief in the transformative power of music. It has since grown to include over 750 children, ages five to 18, from 62 cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and has become a world-class example of why music is called the universal language.
In high demand for their energy and musicianship, OrKidstra has performed on the Juno Awards broadcast, on Parliament Hill as part of the Canada Day 150 Celebrations, in Mexico City under the baton of Grammy-Award-winning conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and many more. The charity is grateful to have the support of three OrKidstra Ambassadors: acclaimed pianist Angela Hewitt, C.C., O.B.E, Alexander Shelley, Music Director of the NAC Orchestra, and Juno Award-winning jazz and soul singer and songwriter Kellylee Evans.
OrKidstra est un programme de développement social destiné aux enfants de communautés en quête d’équité vivant à Ottawa. Il permet l’acquisition de compétences essentielles comme le travail d’équipe et le sens des responsabilités en exposant les enfants aux joies et aux défis de la pratique musicale.
L’organisme a pour mission de favoriser l’autonomie des jeunes et de renforcer le sentiment d’appartenance par le langage universel qu’est la musique; il fournit des instruments et offre des leçons de musique gratuites à des enfants de familles à faible revenu, leur donnant ainsi une occasion de se dépasser en musique.
Né d’une profonde conviction dans le pouvoir transformateur de la musique, le programme a vu le jour en 2007; il rassemblait à l’époque 27 jeunes. Une dizaine d’années plus tard, OrKidstra réunit plus de 750 enfants de 5 à 18 ans provenant de 62 communautés culturelles et linguistiques différentes, et sert même de référence mondiale en matière d’éducation musicale.
Très sollicité en raison du talent et de l’énergie de ses membres, OrKidstra a offert des prestations, entre autres, à la cérémonie des prix Juno, sur la Colline du Parlement pour les célébrations du 150e anniversaire du Canada et à Mexico sous la direction de Gustavo Dudamel, chef primé aux Grammy. L’organisme est fier de pouvoir compter sur le soutien de trois ambassadeurs et ambassadrices de marque : la réputée pianiste Angela Hewitt, C.C., O.B.E, Alexander Shelley, le directeur musical de l’Orchestre du CNA, et Kellylee Evans, chanteuse et compositrice de jazz et de soul primée aux Juno.
