<p><span data-contrast="none">Rien n’échappe au système, même pas l’art. Surtout pas l’art. Pour Joshua Schwebel, au contraire, le milieu artistique dépend complètement de la structure capitaliste et contribue, par le fait même, à reproduire les inégalités et les crises qu’elle provoque. Sa proposition s’inscrit alors dans une posture critique des institutions et des infrastructures ainsi que dans la démonstration des liens flagrants entre le financement de l’art et l’extractivisme – comme en témoigne l’exemple du mécène Pierre Lassonde, dont la fortune provient d’investissements dans l’industrie minière. </span><span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"335551550":6,"335551620":6,"335559738":0,"335559739":0}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="none">En résidence à Rouyn-Noranda, Joshua souhaite d’abord rencontrer les membres de la communauté pour revenir plus tard avec une exposition ancrée dans la réalité locale, puisque la spécificité du contexte constitue son premier matériau de création. En visitant les lieux directement impactés par l’exploitation des ressources naturelles, l’artiste espère surpasser la déconnexion qui persiste entre les carrefours artistiques et les territoires qui, par la dépossession de leurs ressources, permettent l’existence de ceux-ci. Loin de penser se soustraire à son tour au système, Joshua Schwebel cherche d’abord à provoquer la discussion, à produire des objets de réflexion pour rendre visibles les mécanismes politiques et sociaux qui sous-tendent la réalisation des œuvres, dans une tentative de réduire la distance qui nous éloigne de cette conscience.</span><span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"335551550":6,"335551620":6,"335559738":0,"335559739":0}"> </span></p>

<p>Joshua Schwebel est un artiste conceptuel canadien <span class="TextRun SCXW9380100 BCX0" lang="FR-FR" xml:lang="FR-FR" data-contrast="auto"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW9380100 BCX0">dont le travail examine de manière critique les infrastructures et les dynamiques de pouvoir des institutions artistiques contemporaines</span><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW9380100 BCX0">.</span></span><span class="TextRun SCXW9380100 BCX0" lang="FR-FR" xml:lang="FR-FR" data-contrast="none"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW9380100 BCX0"> Il mobilise la critique institutionnelle, l’action directe et l’intervention performative pour exposer les relations inégalitaires entre création artistique, économie néolibérale et travail culturel.</span></span></p>
<p>Ses recherches récentes <span class="TextRun SCXW225753630 BCX0" lang="FR-FR" xml:lang="FR-FR" data-contrast="none"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW225753630 BCX0">abordent les rapports entre philanthropie, exploitation des ressources et logiques financières. À la suite de résidences à la Struts Gallery (2022), au Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (2023) et à la GN-O (2024), il poursuit son analyse des impacts du soutien étatique à l’extraction sur la souveraineté autochtone et la durabilité climatique. </span></span></p>
<p>Ses oeuvres antérieures ont exploré l’effet de la gentrification sur la culture (<em>The Tenant</em>, Centre Clark, 2021; <em>The Ground</em>, Berlin Art Prize, 2019; <em>Evictions</em>, Forest City Gallery, 2021; <em>Subsidy</em>, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, 2015). Il reçoit le soutien du Conseil des Arts du Canada et du Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.</p>
<p>Durant cette résidence, il approfondira les liens entre industries extractives et institutions culturelles, notamment leur rôle commun dans l’histoire coloniale du territoire. Il mettra en lumière comment le financement, les infrastructures et les représentations de la terre participent à une même logique d’appropriation.</p>
