<p>Ian Cusson is a composer of art, song, opera, and orchestral work. Of Métis (Georgian Bay Métis community) and French Canadian descent, his work explores the Canadian Indigenous experience, including the history of the Métis people, the hybridity of mixed-racial identity, and the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures. </p>
<p>He studied composition with Jake Heggie and Samuel Dolin and piano with James Anagnoson at the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has received numerous awards and grants, including the Chalmers Professional Development Projects grant, the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation Award, and several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.</p>
<p>Ian was the inaugural Carrefour composer with the National Arts Centre Orchestra from 2017 to 2019 and was Composer-in-Residence for the Canadian Opera Company from 2019 to 2021. He was a Co-Artistic Director of Opera in the 21st Century at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and the 2021 recipient of SOCAN's Jan V. Matejcek Classical Music Award and the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize. Ian is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers. </p>
<p>He lives in Collingwood, Ontario, with his wife and four children.</p>

D’origine métisse (communauté métisse de la Baie Georgienne) et canadienne-française, il explore, dans son œuvre, l’expérience autochtone au Canada, en particulier l’histoire du peuple métis, l’union des identités raciales mixtes et la rencontre des cultures occidentales et autochtones.</p>
<p>Il a étudié la composition auprès de Jake Heggie et Samuel Dolin ainsi que le piano sous la houlette de James Anagnoson à l’École Glenn-Gould. Lauréat d’un Prix national d’excellence décerné aux Autochtones, il a obtenu de nombreuses subventions, y compris une bourse des Projets Chalmers de perfectionnement professionnel et plusieurs bourses des conseils des arts du Canada, de l’Ontario et de Toronto.</p>

<p>With music described as “breathtaking” <em>(Kitchener-Waterloo Record)</em>, “imaginative and expressive” <em>(The National Post)</em>, “a pulse-pounding barrage on the senses” <em>(The Globe and Mail)</em>, and “Bartok on steroids” <em>(Birmingham News)</em>, Kelly-Marie Murphy’s voice is well known on the Canadian music scene. She has received many prizes, nationally and internationally, including the Azrieli Music Prize and the Leger Prize.</p>
<p>Murphy was born on a NATO base in Sardinia, Italy, and grew up on Canadian Armed Forces bases all across Canada. <p>The NAC Orchestra and the Canadian Museum of Nature have partnered to bring you a Musical Scavenger Hunt like no other. Using your mobile device, decipher the musical clues to learn about the Museum’s eclectic artifacts and their respective “spheres.” </p>
<p>But you won’t be the first one to visit these items! Over the past few months, composers from across Canada — and one living in Finland! — have explored these exhibits and have acted upon their inspirations, creating these musical works that reflect observed aesthetics and positioning within the Anthropocene. </p>
<p>The composers commissioned by the NAC Orchestra to create the music include Alexina Louie, Carmen Braden, Ian Cusson, Kelly-Marie Murphy and Corie Rose Soumah, and the NAC Orchestra’s Associate Principal Viola, David Marks, among others. Performed by NACO musicians, these new works further the “orchestra as ecosystem” narrative by conceptualizing ties from each instrument family to the festival’s four spheres. </p>
<p>Biosphere is represented by the String Family. A precursor to the modern-day violin, animal guts have long been stretched across wooden frames — and, for centuries, offered unrivaled warmth, sweetness, and brilliance in timbre. </p>
<p>Atmosphere ties to the Woodwind Family, inspired by birds in flight, the open skies, and pendulous redirections of air current propelled by contrasting atmospheric pressures. </p>
<p>Lithosphere is connected to the Brass Family, reflecting the contrasting properties and structural builds of natural versus human-made metals. </p>
<p>And lastly, Hydrosphere is represented by the Percussion Family, drawing inspiration from fossils, vertebrae, the metronomic taps of melting glacier ice, and the deep-sea amplification of tectonic erosion. </p>
<p>Intended for all-ages, the Musical Scavenger Hunt is a self-guided event, and is available at the Canadian Museum of Nature for the duration of the NAC Orchestra’s SPHERE Festival. </p>

<p>Ian Cusson is a composer of art, song, opera, and orchestral work. Of Métis (Georgian Bay Métis community) and French Canadian descent, his work explores the Canadian Indigenous experience, including the history of the Métis people, the hybridity of mixed-racial identity, and the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures. </p>
<p>He studied composition with Jake Heggie and Samuel Dolin and piano with James Anagnoson at the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has received numerous awards and grants, including the Chalmers Professional Development Projects grant, the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation Award, and several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.</p>
<p>Ian was the inaugural Carrefour composer with the National Arts Centre Orchestra from 2017 to 2019 and was Composer-in-Residence for the Canadian Opera Company from 2019 to 2021. He was a Co-Artistic Director of Opera in the 21st Century at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and the 2021 recipient of SOCAN's Jan V. Matejcek Classical Music Award and the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize. Ian is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers. </p>
<p>He lives in Collingwood, Ontario, with his wife and four children.</p>

<p>Corie Rose Soumah draws inspiration and creates her music for common places such as bus stops and waiting rooms. Her pieces mainly seek the middle ground between aggressiveness and fragility. Winner of a SOCAN Foundation Award, Corie Rose works have been performed by the string quartet Flux, choir Les voix parallèles, ensemble Paramirabo, percussion sextet Sixtrum, ensemble Contemporary Insight and Orkest de Ereprijs. She also participated to the “24th Young composer meeting” in the Netherlands, “highSCORE festival” and “soundSCAPE festival” both in Italy. Also passionate about the encounter between music and other artistic forms, she contributed to several multidisciplinary projects with students from L’École supérieure de Ballet du Québec and students from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal as well as the actor Yves Desgagnés. Corie Rose holds a bachelor degree in composition from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal where she studied with Nicolas Gilbert and Jimmie Leblanc. She will be pursuing a DMA at Columbia University in Fall 2020 where she will study with George Lewis, George Friedrich Haas and Zosha Di Castri.</p>

<p>Corie Rose Soumah s'inspire et crée sa musique dans des lieux communs tels que les arrêts de bus et les salles d'attente. Ses pièces cherchent principalement le juste milieu entre l'agressivité et la fragilité. <p>In 2014, after 12 years of living abroad, violist David Marks returned to Canada to accept the position of Associate Principal Viola with the NAC Orchestra. Born in Vancouver, David grew up in Virginia in the heart of a musical family. From an early age, he experimented with composing, writing, drawing, and painting. These passions have resulted in dozens of original songs, paintings, and murals. His viola studies took him across the U.S. and Europe for lessons with Roberto Diaz, Atar Arad, Karen Tuttle, Gerard Caussé, Thomas Riebl, and Nobuko Imai and to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Académie de Musique Tibor Varga, and Prussia Cove.</p>
<p>In Europe, David performed as Principal Viola with the Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier and the Opéra national de Bordeaux, the Orquesta de la Ciudad de Granada, Holland Symfonia, and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. He was Principal Viola of the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski, Christoph Eschenbach, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Marin Alsop. As a fixture on the contemporary music scene, David performed across Europe with the Asko/Schonberg Ensemble, Ensemble Modern, the Mondriaan Quartet, Fabrica Musica, and Nieuw Amsterdamse Peil. He was a member of the avant-garde Dutch contemporary music group Nieuw Ensemble, with whom he toured China and recorded over 40 works.</p>
<p>As a folk musician, David has toured Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, singing his songs with The History of Dynamite. His folk opera<em> The Odyssey</em> was performed at the Banff Centre and subsequently at Theater de Cameleon in Amsterdam. He plays fiddle and guitar and has performed with Van Dyke Parks, Bill Frisell, and Patrick Watson. </p>
<p>He lives with his wife and four children in Wakefield, Quebec.</p>

<p>Karen Donnelly was unanimously appointed Principal Trumpet of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra in October 1999, following three successful seasons (1996-1999) as acting principal trumpet and continues to enjoy each year with this wonderful ensemble. </p>
<p>Before joining the NAC Orchestra, Karen was a freelancer in Montreal, where she performed with most ensembles in the area, including the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Karen was the principal trumpet with Orchestra London (Canada) from 1994 to 1996. She has been guest principal trumpet with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and currently enjoys playing Associate Principal Trumpet with the Sun Valley Music Festival Orchestra. </p>
<p>Karen has been a featured soloist with many professional and community-based groups. These include the NAC Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, the Kingston Symphony, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London, the McGill Symphony Orchestra, the Hannaford Silver Street Band, the National Honour Band of Canada, the Parkdale Orchestra, the University of Regina Wind Ensemble, and many high school bands in the region. </p>
<p>In 2019, Karen spearheaded a new initiative, the Canadian Women’s Brass Collective, to shine a light on female brass players and provide visibility and mentoring for all students. </p>
<p>Music education has always been very close to Karen’s heart. Her work with the True North Brass Quintet creates opportunities for educational concerts and workshops in schools. Through the NAC’s learning and engagement programs, Karen has given masterclasses in Switzerland, Mexico, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Canada. </p>
<p>Karen joined the teaching staff at the University of Ottawa in 2002, and she is an honorary teaching artist and mentor for the OrKidstra program, providing music to kids in equity-deserving communities in Ottawa.</p>
<p>Karen studied at the University of Regina and McGill University, where she completed a Master of Music. She wouldn’t be a musician, however, without her school band program in her hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan. </p>

<p>Après trois saisons couronnées de succès à titre de trompette solo par intérim de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts, Karen Donnelly a fait l’unanimité lors du choix du titulaire permanent du poste en octobre 1999. Elle se dit toujours ravie d’évoluer au sein de ce merveilleux ensemble.</p>
<p>Avant de se joindre à l’Orchestre du CNA, elle était musicienne pigiste à Montréal, où elle s’est produite avec la plupart des ensembles de la région, dont l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, et elle a occupé le poste de trompette solo d’Orchestra London (Canada) de 1994 à 1996. Elle a par ailleurs été trompette solo invitée dans plusieurs ensembles : les orchestres symphoniques de Toronto, de Saint-Louis et de Vancouver, Les Violons du Roy et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Calgary. Elle est actuellement trompette solo associée de l’Orchestre du festival de musique de Sun Valley.</p>
<p>On a également pu l’entendre comme soliste avec un grand nombre d’ensembles professionnels et communautaires tels que l’Orchestre du CNA, l’Orchestre de chambre Thirteen Strings, les orchestres symphoniques de Kingston, de Saskatoon et de McGill, l’Orchestra London, le Hannaford Silver Street Band, le National Honour Band of Canada, le Parkdale Orchestra, l’ensemble à vents de l’Université de Regina et de nombreux ensembles d’écoles secondaires de la région.</p>

<p>Acclaimed composer Alexina Louie has collaborated with leading Canadian and international soloists, ensembles, and orchestras. Her orchestral works have been performed by the San Francisco, Montreal, BBC, St. Louis, Toronto, and Vancouver symphony orchestras, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra. Her compositions have been conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, Alexander Shelley, Kent Nagano, Leonard Slatkin, Pinchas Zukerman, Charles Dutoit, and Ingo Metzmacher.</p>
<p>Singers Barbara Hannigan and Russell Braun, violinist James Ehnes, and pianist Jon Kimura Parker are among the celebrated soloists who have performed her compositions.</p>
<p>Louie’s work spans a wide range of eclectic styles and technical demands, from her much-loved pedagogical piano pieces to main stage opera (<em>The Scarlet Princess</em>) and virtuosic chamber and solo compositions, as well as works for ballet, film, and television.</p>
<p>Her TV projects include the groundbreaking made-for-TV comedic mini-opera <em>Toothpaste</em> and the international award-winning collection of mini-operas <em>Burnt Toast</em> (commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).</p>
<p>For Louie, composing music is an act of self-expression and communication. She freely explores various styles and differing inspirations to create music that reveals truths about the artistic spirit and the times in which we live.</p>
<p>An Officer of the Order of Canada, Alexina Louie has received numerous awards for her lifetime of music creation. She is a recipient of two Juno Awards, the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize, the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, a National Arts Centre Award, a Jean A. Chalmers Award for Musical Composition, the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music, the Lou Applebaum Composers Award (film and television), and two Golden Sheaf Awards for Best Original Film Music. <p>Canadian-Finnish composer Matthew Whittall (b. 1975) began his studies in Montreal. He earned degrees in performance and composition from Vanier College, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Stony Brook University, before settling in Finland in 2001. There he studied at the Sibelius Academy, receiving his Doctor of Music degree with honors in 2013. Whittall’s prolific output covers a wide variety of genres, particularly orchestra, voice, chorus, chamber and solo instrumental works, with occasional forays into electronics. His works have been commissioned and performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Finnish Radio Symphony, the Helsinki Chamber Choir the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, among others, and have featured in festivals and radio broadcasts across Europe, North America and Japan. In 2013, his work “Dulcissima, clara, sonans”, a setting of poetry of Hildegard of Bingen for soprano and orchestra, won Finland’s highest composition award, the Teosto Prize.</p>
<p>Whittall’s music is marked by an attempt to fuse its various disparate influences – Old and New World, Western and non-Western, sacred and secular, classical, folk and popular – into a single, variegated expressive language, and by a use of extramusical imagery ranging from natural phenomena to poetry and landscape art. Upcoming projects include chamber works for the KAAÅS piano trio, Meta4 string quartet, as well as an orchestral commission for the Helsinki Philharmonic’s “Helsinki Variations” project. In August 2019, ten ensembles will premiere Whittall’s second string quartet, “Bright Ferment”, commissioned by the Banff International String Quartet Competition. The 2019-20 orchestral season sees the premiere by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra of a new work for baritone soloist, chorus and orchestra commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian forces. The piece will accompany the WSO and Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam on their tour of the Netherlands in May 2020. In 2019, Whittall was appointed Associate Composer with the UK-based Carice Singers, and will produce a new choral song cycle for them to be premiered in 2020.</p>
<p>Matthew Whittall lives in Helsinki, Finland. In addition to a busy schedule as a freelance composer and music writer, he teaches composition and orchestration at the Sibelius Academy. His work has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Fund and the Jenny and Antti Wihuri fund, among others. Most recently, he was awarded a five-year grant from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland, beginning in 2018.</p>

Il cherche à leur faire parler une langue unique, hétéroclite et évocatrice en usant d’une imagerie qui dépasse l’univers musical pour englober les phénomènes naturels, la poésie ou l’art paysager. Parmi ses projets à venir, on compte des œuvres de musique de chambre pour le trio avec piano KAAÅS et le quatuor à cordes Meta4, ainsi qu’une œuvre pour orchestre commandée par l’Orchestre philharmonique d’Helsinki dans le cadre du projet Helsinki Variations. En août 2019, dix ensembles présentent pour la première fois le deuxième quatuor à cordes du compositeur, Bright Ferment, une commande pour le Concours international de quatuors à cordes de Banff.
