<p>Le collectif La Bête à cinq têtes rassemble quatre artistes franco-yukonnaises aux pratiques diverses (Marie-Hélène Comeau, Cécile Girard, Virginie Hamel et Françoise La Roche). Pour cette exposition, le collectif présente une collaboration où l’art et la légende de la chasse-galerie deviennent les pierres angulaires d’une réflexion identitaire nordique.</p>
<p>C’est l’écrivain québécois Honoré Beaugrand qui a immortalisé cette légende en publiant une version en français et en anglais à la fin du XIXe siècle. La Chasse-galerie raconte l’histoire d’un groupe de bûcherons isolés dans un camp qui s’ennuient de leurs dulcinées à la veille du jour de l’An. Le diable leur propose un pacte pour les conduire au village dans un canot volant. La règle : pas de mots d’Église, ne pas s’approcher des clochers d’église et revenir avant l’aube. Sinon, tout le groupe sera condamné à errer dans le ciel pour l’éternité et leurs âmes appartiendront au diable.</p>
<p>Cette légende aborde des thèmes taillés sur mesure pour le Nord. L’hiver interminable où se côtoie l’entre-deux de l’obscurité et de la lumière, le rêve et le voyage, l’isolement et la compagnie, et le temps présent et passé.</p>

<p>The collective La Bête à cinq têtes is made up of four Yukon Francophone artists (Marie-Hélène Comeau, Cécile Girard, Virginie Hamel and Françoise La Roche) working in a range of media. In this exhibition, the collective presents a collaboration that explores Northern identity through art and the legend of the flying canoe.</p>
<p>The legend of the flying canoe was immortalized by Quebec writer Honoré Beaugrand when he published a version of the story in both French and English in the late 19th century. The legend tells the story of a group of lumberjacks in a remote camp who are missing their sweethearts on New Year’s Eve. The devil offers to take them to their village in a flying canoe, but in exchange, they must agree to three conditions: they’re not to let any “church words” come out of their mouths, they aren’t to go near any church steeples, and they must be back before dawn. If the pact is broken, the whole group will be condemned to spend eternity wandering through the sky, and their souls will belong to the devil.</p>
<p>The themes of this legend are tailor-made for the North, with the interminable winter, hovering between dark and light, dreams, travel, isolation and company, past and present.</p>
